Electric Car Makers Up the Voltage to Cut Charging Times

Automakers are increasingly embracing electric vehicles with 800-volt architectures to attract drivers wanting shorter charge times.
Automakers are increasingly embracing electric vehicles with 800-volt architectures to attract drivers wanting shorter charge times.

Of 45 manufacturers tracked by BNEF, 17 have announced models using the technology and a further seven say they will adopt 800-volt platforms but haven't yet revealed a specific vehicle. At the moment, 400-volt systems are more common.

Charging at a higher voltage allows for faster fill-ups because the lower current reduces energy lost to heat and shrinks component sizes. But the switch requires a significant amount of re-engineering and some companies are still debating whether the extra costs are worth it.
